Bundibugyo in west Uganda, provides home to the tropical Semuliki forest near the Rwenzori mountain range where some of the highest quality cacao beans are produced. The harvested fresh cacao pods are sold into a network organized by Latitude Trade Co. with over 4500 smallholder producers – almost 50% of which are women. LTC also established a centralized fermentation and drying facility in Kasese, where all the beans are blended together to provide uniform batches of cacao that are bountiful in rich flavour. Operating since 2016, LTC provides not only training in ecological farming and high quality cacao productivity, but also supports local farmers financially in building credit – ultimately producing consistently exceptional cacao beans.
